Almost Lost My Spoons
Let's Write! Daily Prompt

I'm working on character development for a story called"Friends & Enemies" that centers around a girl from the Drama Freaks and a boy from the Jocks and their unlikely love.

The prompt that I found:

"Naked"

This prompt reminded me of a pivotal scene around the beginning of the book where Cat, the main character, is nearly raped by Austin's best friend in order to make her look like a bad person... We'll see.

I'll report my findings at the end of the week.

Thanks and have a pleasant day!

Findings for this week's prompt!
“Oi! Kira!”
Kira heard her named called through the door of the bathroom and sighed. “What?!” she called back.
“Matt is asking for you! He wants to see you right away!”
“Matt does realize that I just finished showering, doesn’t he?”
The girl on the other side of the door groaned. “Yes. That’s why he wants to see you now!”
“Really, Sasha…” Kira asked, sighing. “Very well; I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Kira, I’d like to see you in my room… now.” A cool voice issued from the other side of the door and Kira froze. It was Matt.
“V-Very well, sir.” Kira grabbed the towel from the hanger beside the shower curtain and quickly dried herself off, then wrapped the towel around her body and unlocked the door. She opened it to see Matt standing before her.
Without so much as a word, Matt grabbed Kira’s wrist and dragged her out of the bathroom, along the hallway and into his room where he threw her inside and locked them in together.
“What am I?” Matt asked after a long silence during which Kira slid against the floor so her back was to the wall.
“You are Alpha.”
“And what are you?”
“I am an Assassin.”
"What else is an Assassin called?"
"A Spy."
“And why are you a Spy?”
“Because I infiltrate other organizations to get information.”
Matt sighed. “If you know all this, then why go to the Avengers?”
“Because --” Kira began, but Matt cut her off.
“Telling them some of the Pack secrets and some of your abilities!”
“To get them to trust me.” Kira had lowered her voice to a mere whisper while Matt’s had risen, and her eyes were dangerous. Matt could have seen why she was the former Alpha’s mate. “You’ve obviously never been a Spy.” She sighed.
“How did you tell them?” Matt asked.
Kira did her characteristic head tilt, like a dog, with one eyebrow raised, confused.
“Stand!” It was a command, and Kira obeyed.

She stood with care as to make sure that the towel didn’t show anything. However, once she was standing, Matt ripped the damp cloth off her body, revealing her scars and past injuries. Nothing new had marked her body. Matt sighed with something Kira hoped was relief.

Thanks and have a pleasant day!

Oh Gosh! Look at the Time!

Almost Lost My Spoons!
Oops!

Goodness, I didn't realize it was Wednesday already!
Wow, time flies when you're having fun!

I went to my first Metal concert on Monday! ( which is probably why I wasn't able to get the prompt out ). It was a concert for Kamelot -- which is a band I highly recommend for someone who likes metal -- and it was AMAZING! I had so much fun! Oh my gosh!
I got to shake hands with Tommy Karevik who is the lead singer for the band!
I've been squee-ing all day since and I couldn't sit still on Monday; I was just so excited. I've been a fan of Kamelot for fifteen ( that's right 15 ) years and was looking forward to this concert since December!

Here's a link to Kamelot's newest song!: Here!

Yay!

So, anyways, I'll start again on the 25th. I'll continue to update every so often, but the regular schedule will resume on Monday, the 25th of May.

Thanks and have a pleasant day!

Findings for this week's prompt!

Kristoph meandered around the Menileus grounds, determined to find something to do. As he walked, his thoughts began to wander. How long had he been like this? Well, that was a dumb question. His mother hated him in favor of his little sister Helena. As Kristoph had been the bastard child of his father and Mr. Greensworth’s mistress Lindsay, his mother had little use and care for him.
“Feeling down again, Mr Greensworth?”
Kristoph looked up and saw the gardener, Mr Archaon, staring at him from across the garden hedges.
“I told you not to call me that!” Kristoph sighed after his outburst. “I’m sorry; I just dislike that name.”
“Very well, Mr Kristoph. What shall I call you instead?”
Kristoph looked away from Mr Archaon’s intense stare. “I’ve been thinking about Arc.”
“Why ‘Arc?’ Why not something similar to your birth name?”
“Because I hate this place. I hate my father, my mother. The only people I get along with are the servants as that’s all I am to my parents.” Kristoph glanced sheepishly at Mr Archaon. “Plus, I’ve always liked your name.”
“Very well. I shall refer to you as Mr Arc.” Mr Archaon bowed elegantly and smiled at the young master. “Any last name?”
Arc thought a moment. When nothing jumped to mind, he thought a little harder. “Miles…” he said with hesitation after a moment.
“A soldier?” Mr Archaon asked. “Or distance?”
When Arc looked at the gardener with confusion, he elaborated.
“The meaning of miles; it traces back to an ancient language meaning ‘soldier’ but is also a unit of measuring distance.”
“You certainly are very knowledgeable, Mr Archaon,” Arc said, smiling.
“It comes with reading all kinds of books,” the gardener answered with a grin. “But, as far as names go, you should have a name that means something to you.”
“Probably distance…”
“Why’s that?”
Arc took a moment to respond. “I’ve been taught that I have no place here, so I shall wander miles to get away.”
Mr Archaon smiled. “Good choice.” He knelt down before Arc and whispered: “Want to help me plant some flowers?”
“Are they for my mother?” Arc asked in return.
Mr Archaon glanced away. “Yes,” he answered hesitantly. “You’re father requested them.”

Character Creation: The Basics

I know I was supposed to upload a third part to character creation, but I drove home yesterday -- through snow, rain, sleet and hail I might add -- and got home so exhausted I couldn't conjure up the brain power to write part three of the basics of character creation.

So I apologize. However, I am feeling better, but I'd like to keep my schedule the same, so I'll post part three next Saturday.

Aleila motioned for the crowd of young people to draw closer, using her fingers in a tantalizing manner. “But, it was just the trees in the wind,” she whispered in her scariest voice.
The crowd of younger kids shivered and a few squealed with fright.
Aleila was really good at telling scary stories. The kids of the Thunder Tribe loved her stories. She made them sound so real. However, she never told scary jump stories, like Kiryu always asked her to. She said they weren’t her storytelling style.
“Really?” a young girl asked Aleila. “Was it really just the tree in the wind?”
Aleila grinned. “That’s the mystery, isn’t it.”
The firelight glinted off her teeth and her face was thrown into shadow for a moment, making her appear extremely spooky. Her slight fangs gleamed in the light from the moon and her icy green eyes glowed a bit. The wind picked up and her hair floated around her head like she was underwater.
For a moment, she looked like the evil spirit from her story. Then, the clouds uncovered the moon and she returned to normal.
“Ms Aleila, you’re so scary!” One of the older boys grinned, though it betrayed his fright.
“Now, off to bed. The lot of you,” Aleila said, smiling. She ushered the kids away from the circle they’d been sitting in for the story, towards their respective houses.
“Where are you going, Ms Aleila?” a small voice asked from her side.
Aleila looked down to her hip and saw a small floating orb that glowed a light green sitting just out of sight of the tribes’ camp.
“Elux? What are you doing here?”
“Looking for you. When you didn’t come home, Ulahi sent us out to find you.”
“Aleila!”
Aleila looked wildly around and shuffled the orb away from her. “I can’t go back now. My master’s calling me.”
“You need to come home!” Elux insisted, trying to stick by Aleila’s side.
“I can’t! I have a Master!”
“Wait… you have a master?”
“Yes,” Aleila said, exasperated. “What part of ‘I can’t! I have a Master’ don’t you understand?”
“Who?”
“You should go invisible and you’ll find out,” Aleila said, continuing to shuffle the orb away.
The orb shot her a glare and vanished in a puff of light.
“Aleila!”
“Yes?” Aleila rounded the corner of a hut and saw Yusei jogging towards her.
“Where’ve you been?”
“Telling stories,” Aleila said, a small smile appearing across her lips in memory.
Yusei reached for her wrist and Aleila allowed him to grab it. As he dragged her away, Yusei thought about what questions he could ask to get her to tell him what stories she’d been telling.
Since Yusei’d untied her, Aleila had been really obedient in following him around. She understood well what her role as a slave was. However, sometimes the kids of the Tribe stole her away to tell stories around the campfire.
After the first scare, Yusei knew where to look for her if he couldn’t find her by his side.
“Which story did you tell this time?” he asked as they neared his house.
“A scary one,” Aleila muttered. “It was about the heritage of the Wind Tribe… though I didn’t tell them that…”
“The origin story of the Wind Tribe is a scary one?” Yusei asked, turning his head to glance back at Aleila.
“Well, I bent the details a bit…” she murmured as she followed Yusei into his house. “You hungry?” she asked, rather suddenly.

Tomorrow I will post about the third part of the basics of building a character.

Character Creation: The Basics - Part Two

Almost Lost My Spoons!
Character Creation: The Basics

The next step is choosing a race, class and gender.

If this is a fantastic world where you have created your own race or are using a template, use that for some of your other "stats."

There are all kinds of websites out there that help with different races and classes. I find that Pathfinder has a lot of choices when it comes to medieval-style stories. BESM and FATE are good for futuristic or fantastic-modern settings.

The Chaotic Good Ace from last time is a guy, so that might weigh in to a few things in upcoming stages, but not here.
His class is fighter and his race is human.

His class:"fighter" means a few things from last time.  He has a high strength and constitution. His dexterity is not terribly "high" and because he's a tactician, he has a higher wisdom than intelligence and charisma.
His race: "human" has several 'archetypes' such as persistence, drives, endurance and ambition. Not all of these apply to our Chaotic Good Ace, but some do.  He's ambitious and has drive but  has little patience for diplomatic events.

We'll get to character strengths and flaws later.

Almost Lost My Spoons

Let's Write! Daily Findings

Findings for this week's prompt!

Kitt awoke with a jump as the window by her desk was hit. It didn’t shatter, but it scared her and she crawled out of bed and checked her window. A gross splatter covered the vast majority of her window, and before it could start eating at the glass, she used a caplet of plasma-clearing on the other side and the glass dissolved as the two chemicals combined.
Quickly and efficiently, Kitt pulled a different caplet out and forced it to mold to the space that had dissolved. As the caplet split and molded to the glass, a bullet was stopped by the new material.
Kitt jumped back and grabbed her sniper rifle. A bullet already loaded, Kitt aimed for forest beyond her window. Closing her eyes, Kitt opened her mind and saw the heat signature of the other firearm and its controller. Lying on her stomach, Kitt took aim and fired through the wall below the window.
Her special bullet went through the wall, materializing on the other side, aimed for the other sniper.
She smiled with satisfaction as she heard a howl of pain and the heat signature was dislodged from the limb they were stationed on and began to fall. The scream ended when the body hit the forest floor.
A rapid succession of poundings against her door pulled Kitt from her mind and opened her eyes again.
“Kitt!”
It was Sean. Kamui must be with him.
“You alright?!”
“Fi--” Kitt began to respond, but her arm began to hurt. Her head spinning, she looked down and noticed blood pooling around her left elbow. It appeared that a bit of the goo from the window had fallen onto her upper arm and burned through her skin and into her nerves and muscle.
Grabbing her water glass from the bedside table, Kitt poured the water into her open wound. It burned and she screamed, but continued to clean her wound.
“KITT!” Sean pounded on the door, trying to break it down.
Her scream died as she ran out of air and inhaled a deep, shuddering gasp. She felt like crying. But she couldn’t. Not yet. First, she had to tell Sean she was fine. She opened her mouth to do so, but a sudden wave of nausea hit her and she toppled onto the floor. Struggling to keep her consciousness, she heard a voice from the window.
“Good. It worked.”
“Dammit!” she muttered as she felt her body being rolled over. “Who are you?” she asked once she was face up.
“I’m surprised, Kittland Cross,” the voice said. It was dark and Kitt couldn’t see a face. “I expected you to remember me.” It didn’t help that they had a hood on.
“I’ve met a lot of people,” Kitt said, trying to keep the nausea at bay while she spoke. “I can’t remember every single one.”
“However, we’ve been friends since before you were Princess…” Under the hood, a smirk appeared in the moonlight as realization dawned in Kitt.
“DeSantinero Bruns?” she asked, her mouth gaping.
“Good. Glad you remembered.” DeSantinero’s smirk widened. “Time for you to come home!” He began to kneel down and was sliding an arm under Kitt back to pick her up when the door burst open.
In the threshold stood Sean. His twin beam sabers were out and it appeared he’d cut out the locked handle to get into Kitt’s room. Kamui wasn’t behind him and Kitt could hear the sounds of swords clashing by the front door.
Upon seeing the hooded figure over an immobilized Kitt, Sean’s rage flared.
“Get away from her, creep!” he screamed, charging at DeSantinero, beam sabers ready.
DeSantiero had a choice before him and Kitt could see his frustrated look as he glanced between Kitt and Sean. He could fight Sean; a fight he’d always wanted, but his orders were to get Kittland Cross.
Finally, he decided and Kitt felt her body being lifted onto DeSantinero’s shoulder. Her open wound brushed against his clothes and she moaned with pain.
“You like that, don’t you.” DeSantiero’s smirk was back as he caressed Kitt’s rear. “You’ve always been one to like pain.”
“Shut up,” Kitt groaned.
“Put her down!” Sean yelled, but his attack was halted when DeSantinero placed Kitt between him and the sabers. “That’s playing dirty…” Sean growled.
“It’s okay, Sean,” Kitt said, glancing at him from over DeSantinero’s shoulder. “Run the bastard through. I’ll be alright.” She smiled as convincingly as she could. She was getting the feeling back in her body and she wiggled her fingers and toes.
“You can’t be serious.” DeSantinero seemed appalled by what Kitt was saying. “Even you couldn’t survive a hit by a beam saber.”
“That’s fine by me,” Kitt hissed and swung a leg back and kicked DeSantinero in the gut, forcing him to double over and Kitt managed to wiggle free.
“Now!” Kitt screamed at Sean and Sean charged.  His sabers pierced through DeSantinero’s armor and into his body.
He died before he hit the floor.
Once he finished pulling his saber out of DeSantinero’s body, Sean turned to look at Kitt.
Kitt wasn’t feeling too well. She felt pale and sick. Her wound had started to bleed again. She looked up as Sean knelt before her, opening her mouth to say she was fine, but she couldn’t get the words to come out. Sh felt blood escape the corner of her mouth.
“You’re all just dolls in a game for power. Too bad he really wanted to see Kitt again.” A voice echoed from DeSantinero’s body, forcing Sean to wheel around and for Kitt to narrow her eyes through her pain to see straight. “Keep fighting. It makes the game more interesting…” Evil laughter followed and DeSantinero’s body evaporated into the air.
“Kitt!”
Kitt heard her name being called and she tried to keep her eyes open. She could barely see let alone see straight and she felt herself fall forward into a soft, comfortable embrace.
---
“Will she be alright?”
“Yeah. She should be fine. Luckily, the wound didn’t reach the bone; she cleaned it before it could do any real damage.”
The first voice sighed with relief. “Good. I’m glad she’ll be alright.”
“However, she might not have use of that arm for a while…”
“Wha-What do you mean?”
“The wound was very deep into her muscles and it might be hard for her to flex.”
“But don’t worry. She’ll recover soon. She has a strong will…” a third voice chimed in.
Kitt groaned as she felt a weight on the bed next to her.
“Kitt?” That was definitely Sean’s voice.
The side of her face was caressed and she tried to open her eyes.
“Shhh!” Sean’s voice was comforting. “You’re safe now. I took you to a friend medic who stitched up your wound.”
Kitt relaxed as she registered what Sean was saying. Tears formed in her eyes and she sniffled, raising an arm to wipe her tears off her face.
“Wh-What wrong?” Sean asked, clearly taken-aback by Kitt suddenly crying.

Tomorrow I will post about the second part of the basics of building a character.

Character Creation: The Basics - Part One

Almost Lost My Spoons!
Character Creation: The Basics

So, our Chaotic Good Ace needs some "stats." In a table top RPG, a player character has a set of statistics that determines what he/she can do.  There are a variety of ways to break down the basic "stats" such as Pathfinder and D&Ds' six "ability scores:" Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma.
Other RPG's use different systems, but they all get the same point across: what are your characters' physical and mental attributes?
Age is also a stat, so keep an age range in mind while creating a character.

Our Chaotic Good Ace is probably in his mid-twenties and is good with close-combat. This means he probably has a high strength and constitution in order to push enemies back and be able to take hits. He's probably not very dexterous because he's not leaping over battlefields or climbing walls during combat.
Because he's a tactician and a strategist, he has a high wisdom, but a medium intelligence.

*The difference between Intelligence and Wisdom is ( as it was explained to me ) Intelligence is book-smart vs Wisdom which is street-smart. Intelligence is how fast your character learns and reasons whereas Wisdom describes a character's willpower, common sense, awareness and intuition.

Charisma is probably not high with this character -- at least in the beginning.

We could assign numerical values to each category, and you can if that's helpful to you. You can do 1 to 10 or 1 to 20 or 1 to 5, so on and so on; do what feels right for you. If putting a number to a word will help you remember what you were thinking about that character, do it!

However, it's nice to keep in mind an age range for characters.  A 87-year-old will probably not have a high strength and dexterity "score" and a 6-year-old is probably not going to be as smart as a 36-year-old. And, with your numbers, be sure to prescribe what each number means and keep your scale the same and consistent.

Let's Write! Daily Findings

Here are my findings for the first prompt:

“That the land is one constant in my life is a great comfort.”
“What does that mean?” Mao asked.
Tabby glanced around them; at the forest that shaded them from the high noon sun. “The land doesn’t change much quickly. Unless people change the land, the land doesn’t move. And this fact alone makes the land better than people.” Tabby looked at Mao out of the corner of her eyes. “Not to say that people are all bad. People just change too rapidly; their quick to backstab their comrades and switch sides.”
Mao was grateful that Arc wasn’t around. Since Arc liked Tabby, he might change who he was to fit what Tabby’s ideal partner was, but since Tabby just spoke about how much she disliked change in people, it would be bad if Arc changed for Tabby’s sake.
“You certainly sound like a hermit druid,” Mao joked.
Tabby frowned at Mao, lowering her chin so her head was level again. It was an ongoing joke that Tabby was a druid, though she wasn’t. Arc had started it.
In Tabby’s defense, she was raised off the ideas of druids, so she prayed whenever she killed an animal, loved and lived off the land and scorned when she saw someone hurting the land or killing recklessly.

Character Creation: The Planning Stage

Almost Lost My Spoons!
Character Creation: The Planning

Over all my years of writing, I think that character creation and building has always been fun. I like to think of it as building a character for a table top RPG like Pathfinder or D&D.
But, we'll go about this in steps. This step is the Planning Stage -- before you get to the hard facts about your character, you need to figure out some things before hand.

When you're thinking of a character, it's good to a have an archetype in mind. By archetype I mean a universal theme that a character encompasses. For example, there's the Hero Archetype; usually a good character that fights evil with justice to maintain or restore harmony. Another archetype that is used frequently is the Mentor Archetype; through wise and insightful training and words, the mentor protects the Hero. And, one cannot forget the Villain Archetype; a character whose main function is to oppose the Hero and whom the Hero must fight and defeat to restore peace.
There are many sites online that depict the types of character archetypes and I recommend using them to figure out which kind of character you want to build:
01. TV Tropes Archetypal Characters

Thinking about your characters' archetype will help you figure out what that characters' function is in your story. Let me give an example: I have a story called Roses Bound In Blood and one of the main characters is a "The Ace" archetype. He's good at close- and hand-to-hand-combat as well as strategy and tactics and everyone knows it.

Okay.  We have an archetype in mind.  Naming your character can wait, as can descriptions of features and personality.
For me, I found that finding my characters' alignment is a faster and easier way to determine the characters' function in the story.
TV Tropes has an Alignment page that I always found helpful.

For the "Ace" Archetype, he would be a Chaotic Good alignment. This means he's a rebel and a free-spirit. He believes his own conscious is a better guide than laws, but doesn't consistently break laws for his own gain.  He has a strict code of his own that few understand, and this sometimes hinders his ability to think beyond the upcoming battle.

Remember, your character doesn't have to be an archetype.  It's just nice to have a frame for your character.

Here are my findings for the first prompt:

“I will be a mad boy with my evil lanterns that smile and my goblets of gold. I will be a man worthy of history but selfishly keeping all secrets to myself. I will not submit to the chaos of the Order and will be remembered as simply a hero. My duties to serve the new king will be forgotten; all that shall be remembered in fear is my name. All is wish is for the new king to rule unchecked and unchallenged by those who consider themselves unjustly righteous. It doesn’t matter if my goblets of gold gather dust and cobwebs of silk or my evil lanterns’ smiles turn cold. As long as my king is ruling, I have no greater wish.”
“No greater wish?” Nigai asked. “You wish to serve our king, but have nothing greater in sight? You don’t want to lead our new king to a path of new justice? You don’t wish to stay by our kings’ side and continue working in the shadows, keeping him from harm? ‘Cause that’s what you do; you protect our king from the shadows. I doubt you’ll get higher praise than that.”
Akachi sighed. After a while, he spoke. “As long as I tell myself that I couldn’t be happier, my thoughts won’t keep spinning.”
“Spinning?” asked Nigai.
Akachi nodded, though with little enthusiasm. This was one of the reasons he didn’t like interacting with other General besides Dou’gal, Ketzi’ah or Urd; they just didn’t seem to get it.
Nigai’s look asked him to explain further, but Akachi did not. He just stared at the horizon as though he wanted to tame it; a glare in his eyes and a scowl on his face.

Tomorrow I will post about the planning stages of building a character.

I'm working on character development for a character in a post-apocalyptic story. I needed a starting point...
While browsing the internet for a good prompt, it occurred to me. It doesn't have to be a "good" prompt; it just has to spark something in the imagination.
A teacher once told me: "There is no such thing as Writer's Block; there's just a fear of writing crap."  Which is very true. I just need to dive in and worry about the quality n' stuff later.

The prompt that was generated for me was:
"I will be a mad boy, with my evil lanterns and my goblets."
